Welcome!
The style of traditional karate we practice at our dojo is referred to as Shotokan, founded by Gichin Funakoshi in 1928.
Shotokan training is usually divided into three parts: kihon (basics), kata (forms or patterns of moves), and kumite (sparring). Techniques in kihon and kata are characterized by deep, long stances that provide stability, enable powerful movements, and strengthen the legs. Occasionally, there are lessons on self-defense.
We are open to members of the community from ages 8 and up. Students require enough maturity to listen quietly and absorb the lessons without disrupting/distracting others. Classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday. See the “Training” page for more details.
As a traditional dojo, we adhere closely to proper dojo etiquette and customs. Karate begins and ends with respect. Please review dojo etiquette at this link: Dojo Etiquette - Yale Shotokan Karate

“"The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants."
